How to Sign a PDF Online for Free

Need to sign a PDF but don't have Adobe Acrobat? Here's how to add your signature to any PDF in seconds β€” free, private, and without installing anything.

You’ve received a contract, an agreement, or a form β€” and you need to sign it. But you don’t have Adobe Acrobat, you don’t want to print and scan, and you’re not sure what tool to trust with your documents.

The good news: signing a PDF takes less than a minute, and you don’t need to install anything or hand your file to a server.

The fastest way to sign a PDF for free

  1. Go to the Sign PDF tool
  2. Drop your PDF onto the upload area
  3. Draw your signature with your mouse or finger β€” or type your name
  4. Drag the signature to where it needs to go on the page
  5. Click Sign & Download PDF

That’s it. Your signed PDF downloads instantly, ready to send.

Sign your PDF right now β€” free, private, no account needed.

Draw vs type β€” which should you use?

The tool gives you two ways to create your signature:

  • Draw β€” use your mouse, trackpad, or finger (on touchscreen) to write your signature freehand. This looks the most like a real handwritten signature and works well for formal documents.
  • Type β€” type your name and choose a style: Script, Serif, or Print. Faster than drawing, and perfectly legible. Good for internal documents or when handwriting style isn’t required.

For legal contracts or documents where appearance matters, draw your signature. For quick approvals, typed works fine.

Can I choose where the signature goes?

Yes. After creating your signature, it appears as a draggable overlay on the page preview. Drag it to the exact position β€” signature line, bottom of page, wherever the document requires. You can also resize it by dragging the corner handle.

If the document has multiple pages, use the page navigation to switch pages before applying.

Can I sign all pages at once?

Yes β€” the tool has an β€œApply to all pages” option. This is useful for multi-page agreements where initials or a signature are required on every page.

Is it legally valid?

This depends on your jurisdiction and the type of document. A signature image embedded in a PDF is widely accepted for everyday business documents, internal approvals, and informal agreements.

For documents with strict legal requirements β€” court filings, notarised contracts, regulated financial agreements β€” you may need a qualified electronic signature (QES) with identity verification, which is a different category of service entirely.

For the vast majority of documents most people sign β€” NDAs, offer letters, rental agreements, client contracts β€” a clear, placed signature image is sufficient and widely accepted.

When in doubt about legal validity, check with the other party or your legal counsel. For most everyday use, a drawn signature on a PDF is perfectly fine.

Is my document safe?

PDForge processes everything locally in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to any server. The signing happens entirely on your device β€” the file bytes don’t leave your browser tab.

This matters for sensitive documents. Contracts, employment agreements, and legal forms often contain personal or confidential information. With a server-based tool, that data leaves your device. With PDForge, it doesn’t.

What if I need to sign on my phone?

The Sign PDF tool works on mobile. On a touchscreen, the draw mode lets you sign with your finger directly on the signature pad β€” exactly as you would sign on paper. The signature overlay is also draggable by touch.

Other tools you might need

  • Compress PDF β€” reduce the file size before emailing the signed document
  • Merge PDF β€” combine the signed document with attachments or exhibits
  • Split PDF β€” extract specific pages from a multi-page agreement
  • PDF to Text β€” extract the contract text for review before signing

Signing a PDF should take 30 seconds, not 30 minutes. No printer, no scanner, no software subscription required.
